Biking in Athens
Whether you're a lifelong biking enthusiast, looking for some recreation and exercise or just need a more environmental way to get around campus, Athens is the perfect biking community. You can join a biking club, go for a ride on a mountain bike trail or get your bike repaired.
Athens offers many unique biking trails and paths. The most easily accessible is the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway , which also has descriptions here and here . Nineteen miles of paved path run along the Hocking River through Athens, The Plains, Chauncey, Nelsonville and Wayne National Forest. The bikeway is equipped with restroom and drinking facilities. You can also check out Lake Hope State Park in McArthur, which has twenty-three miles of single-track bike trails or Stroud's Run State Park in Athens. Here are some other maps of Lake Hope and Stroud's Run . There are maps available online of both sites. You can also explore Athens country roads for maps of the area and information on any road damage to watch out for.
Students should register their bikes with the Ohio University Police Department (593-1911) and store them either in bike storerooms (located on New South) or at bike racks located outside of some academic buildings and dormitories. If you're not an OU student but still want to get involved with a bike group, check out the Athens Bicycle Club , or ABC. This group has built trails in both Lake Hope State Park and Stroud's Run State Park and holds the annual Tour of the Hocking road tour every Memorial Day weekend. E-mail info@athensbicycleclub.org for more information. Another exciting group in our area is the Ohio Mountain Bike Association . OMBA is a collection of mountain biking clubs and organizations in Ohio and has an excellent website with a forum, blogs, and a chat room.
If you need to buy a bike or some biking gear, head on over to Athens Bicycle or the Cycle Path Bicycle Shop . Both sites offer bike repairs, rent bikes, sell bikes, tools and clothing.
